OctaneX Technologies Granted a Foundational Syngas-to-SAF Patent by USPTO
OctaneX Technologies, Inc. (OXT) announces the granting of U.S. Patent No. 12,291,683 for “Processes and Systems for Production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel from Syngas Via Mixed Alcohols” by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
The issued patent includes 30 claims covering processes for producing aviation fuel from syngas. The syngas may be made from any suitable carbon-containing source, including biomass, biogas, natural gas, carbon dioxide, municipal solid waste, and plastic waste. The syngas with an optimized H2/CO ratio is catalytically converted to mixed alcohols having an optimized carbon number for the purpose of producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The mixed alcohols are converted to mixed olefins that are oligomerized and hydrotreated to produce stabilized mixed hydrocarbons as SAF.
The worldwide demand for SAF is currently growing and is forecast to require hundreds of commercial SAF plants by 2050 on a global basis. The SAF patent granted today, along with other OXT international patents pending—as well as proprietary process and catalyst know-how—enables OctaneX Technologies to commercially deploy the syngas-to-SAF technology globally for decades to come. U.S. Patent No. 12,291,683 will not expire until October 2044.

About SAF
International Air Transport Association (IATA) projects that to meet its stated goal of attaining net zero by 2050, 65% of aviation fuel needs to come from SAF. A 2022 McKinsey Consulting report suggests that the world may need 1,000+ SAF plants to meet demand by 2050. The International Energy Agency (IEA) anticipates that SAF will constitute about 2% of total aviation fuel supply by 2030, up from near zero in recent years. This growth is expected to be supported by mandates in regions such as the European Union, the UK, and the USA. The United States Department of Energy has set a target of achieving 3 billion gallons of SAF usage annually by 2030, which would account for approximately 12% of the projected U.S. jet fuel demand.
About OXT
OXT pioneered advanced catalytic processes to efficiently synthesize a blend of higher alcohols from Natural Gas, Renewable Natural Gas, CO2 and other Biomass solids. The resulting Mixed Alcohol (MA) blend serves as a low carbon intensity (CI) feedstock for the production of next generation fuels such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and other specialty chemicals.
